Where a permit calls for disinfected effluent, ultraviolet does the job with light instead of chemistry. Nothing to store, nothing to dose, nothing left in the water afterwards.

Why ultraviolet

Disinfection without a chemical on site

Chlorine tablets work, but they are a consumable. Somebody has to buy them, carry them, load them, and remember to. When the tube runs empty the system stops disinfecting and nothing on the property says so.

Ultraviolet has no consumable in that sense. A lamp runs continuously, treated effluent passes it on the way out, and the only scheduled task is a lamp change about every four years — or sooner if the monitoring system flags it. There is no chemical to store, no handling risk, and no disinfection by-product left in the water that reaches the drainfield.

Process

How the unit treats

UV is the last stage. Everything upstream of it exists to make it work.

Secondary treatment first

Effluent reaches the unit already clarified by the treatment plant. This matters more than anything else on this page — ultraviolet light has to reach an organism to affect it, and suspended solids cast shadows. UV placed after a system that is not treating properly will not disinfect.

Flow past the lamp

Clarified effluent passes through the chamber, moving close alongside a low-pressure lamp housed in a quartz sleeve. The sleeve keeps the lamp dry and lets the light through while separating it from the flow.

Exposure

Ultraviolet at germicidal wavelength damages the genetic material of bacteria and viruses in the stream, leaving them unable to reproduce. Nothing is added to the water and nothing is removed from it — the change is to the organisms alone.

Discharge

Disinfected effluent continues to the dispersal method the permit specifies. A bypass and isolation valve let the unit be serviced without taking the whole system down.

Controls

Supplied as a package — with or without the panel

The UV unit ships alone, or as a package with a UL-listed control panel from Legacy Controls built for your application — nitrogen system, aerobic treatment unit, standalone disinfection, or a retrofit to what you already run. The panel is matched to the system it controls, not one-size-fits-all. Lamp ballast, breakers, terminals and the float circuit are laid out and labelled before it leaves the bench.

Terminals are numbered and legended inside the door — ballast power and ground, both lamp circuits and common, high water float, and air pump. Whoever services it in five years does not have to guess.

Replace the lamp

Or whenever the monitoring system says output has dropped below an effective dose. You change it on data, not on a guess — a lamp that still glows is not necessarily still disinfecting.

At each service

Clean the sleeve

Film on the quartz sleeve blocks light before it reaches the flow. Wiping it down is a two-minute job and it is the difference between a working unit and a decorative one.

Continuously

Keep the plant treating

UV depends on clarity. If the treatment plant upstream is struggling, the disinfection stage is the first thing to lose — and it fails quietly.
